Chipotle Guava Barbecue Sauce

Super Bowl weekend has come and gone and all I can think about is my homemade barbecue sauce. In my first attempt at barbecue sauce, I wanted to incorporate guava somehow. I also didn’t want it to be just sweet and one dimensional, so I added chipotle peppers for some heat.

I am a huge fan of sweet baby ray’s barbecue sauce especially the honey chipotle flavor. Every time I reach for a barbecue sauce on the store shelf I cringe at the sugar content. Luckily there are more sugar free options these days.

If you rather make your own barbecue sauce, you will just be as surprised as I was when I made my own. It is extremely easy and takes literally several minutes.

This sauce like many others is ketchup based, but I used sugar free ketchup to cut down on the sugar. Next I added guava jam and chipotle peppers in a pot along side apple cider vinegar. You can skip the sugar but I added two tablespoons of brown sugar for color and a little sweetness.

Heat this up with a couple other spices and you have yourself an easy homemade barbecue sauce. This version covers all the bases as it is not only sweet but has the right amount of acid and kick. This is perfect for tossing with your favorite meats and I can’t wait to make this again in the summer.
