Plantain Fries

This recipe shouldn’t really exist in the sense that it requires little to no time and really a few instructions. As a matter of fact it requires one ingredient which is fried and that is plantains. The tricky part is making sure you have the right ripeness which we will get to later on.

As much as I love french fries just like everyone else, I try to avoid it because it is a fried food. Sometimes we can’t help it especially when having a nice juicy burger or sandwich. Thanks to air fryers, we have another reason to still have it.

These plantain fries gives us another reason to have that sandwich or burger with something different. As mentioned earlier, you will need a couple plantains that are not too ripe. You definitely want to stay away from the green plantains as those are better for tostones.

The right ripeness will be a yellow plantain that just has a little give to the touch and maybe some light green highlights. If it is too ripe then you end up with mushy fries.

As for the recipe, all you do is fry about 7 minutes and salt them. Enjoy immediately.

Plantain Fries

Fried plantains

  • 3-4 plantains (semi ripe (not green, not brown))
  • canola oil (for frying)
  • salt (to taste)
  1. Heat enough oil about a quarter inch deep in a frying pan over medium heat. Check the temperature of the oil as you will need it to reach 350°.

  2. While the oil heats, score the plantain and peel the skin off. Cut it in half and then carefully cut the halves lengthwise into 3 blocks. Be extremely careful as it will be slippery. Next cut the blocks into fry like sizes.

  3. Once the heat reaches 350°, work in batches depending on the size of your pan and add the plantains to the pan. Do not overcrowd it.

  4. In about 7 minutes it reaches a golden yellow color. Carefully take it out using a slotted spoon and place on a cooling rack. Immediately salt and move to the next batch or batches. Serve immediately.
