Guava Jalapeño Margarita

The very first of many drinks to come…The Guava Jalapeño Margarita. Is it too soon to be declaring it the signature drink of my blog? I am a huge fan of the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and when I heard he was coming out with his own tequila, Teramana (not sponsored), I was super excited. I have always been a fan of his work ethic and started purchasing his Project Rock workout gear a few years ago. You can tell he is very involved in anything he puts his name on which in turn trickles down to the quality of his products.

When he finally released Teramana a couple of months ago, I went on the hunt for it and found it soon after but for whatever reason, it never felt like the right moment to pop it open. Although his tequila is a sipping tequila, I figured I could get a little creative and make a Rock-worthy margarita.

Jalapeno margarita? Why not turn it up a notch? I decided to incorporate guava which some of you may be familiar with. It’s definitely one of the most underrated fruits out there.

Guava

Guava is a tropical fruit that is cultivated in Central America, Caribbean islands and Southern America. It’s oval in shape and slightly smaller than a tennis ball, although other species of guava can be slightly larger than that.

Just like most fruits, a dark green color indicates it’s not yet ripe, yet still edible, with a bitter taste. A yellowish color is the ideal state for consumption, with the skin and pulp having a very pleasant aroma. The central seeds can be eaten though they can be a little hard and gritty depending on how ripe the guava is.

The fruit itself is a little hard to find in this part of the world but some specialty markets, like Patel Brothers, do typically have them. They also carry several different brands of guava nectar, while most supermarkets carry at least one.

This recipe uses the guava nectar since it’s easier to find. If you can, go for the no sugar added option. Consider skipping the agave or using less since the nectar liquid is already sweet.

Guava Jalapeño Margarita

Grab a muddler, a shaker and some ice and you will be sipping on this margarita in no time! Adding some jalapeno slices into the shaker and muddling it up releases some spiciness. Throwing in some fresh lime juice adds just the right amount of acidity. The only other ingredients you’ll need are some quality tequila, guava nectar and triple sec.

  • 6 ounces guava nectar
  • 3 ounces tequila (silver)
  • 1 ounce triple sec
  • ¾ ounce agave nectar
  • 2 ounces fresh lime juice
  • guava slice (optional (for garnish))
  • ½ jalapeño  (sliced)
  • ½ tbsp lime zest
  • ½ tbsp sea salt
  • 1 lime cut into wedges
  1. Mix salt and lime zest together on a small plate. Take a lime wedge and rub it around the edge of 2 glasses or mason jars. Dip the glasses into the salt and lime zest mixture.

  2. Throw about 6 – 7 slices of jalapeño into a shaker and muddle them using a muddler. Add in lime juice and muddle a little more.

  3. Add guava nectar, triple sec, tequila, agave nectar and ice into the shaker and shake vigorously.

  4. Divide the mix into the rimmed glasses or mason jars and top with a guava slice or jalapeño.

  5. Enjoy!
